Helsinki Fat Clay
NEW CERAMICS FROM FINLAND
Erna Aaltonen, Åsa Hellman, Eliisa Isoniemi, Kirsi Kivivirta, Pekka Paikkari, Heikki Rahikainen,
Kristina Riska, Johanna Rytkölä, Kim Simonsson, Caroline Slotte, Kati Tuominen-Niittylä
"Helsinki Fat Clay group represents different styles recalling a great tradition and a rich art movement
made up of several divergent elements harmoniously linked to each other. They present the idea of a
common project respecting each personality. This results in unique pieces of stoneware and porcelain,
examples of design and informal art stretching from elegant conceptual minimalism to photo-ceramic
techniques, from the perfect line of form to pop art emanating from manga-cartoons.
Someone defined the philosophy of this group as “formal asceticism.” To support this thesis, it is possible
to find in the artist’ actions an absolute respect for the synergy of the four elements, for their origin, for the
materials, from ancestral and archaic dimensions to the most sophisticated vanguard while respecting the
contemporary world and its cultural background.
Helsinki Fat Clay represents a powerful group in the country known for the Arabia Porcelain Factory
founded 130 years ago, where designers and artists operated with a far-sighted vision devoted to the
preservation and wealth of the ceramic world."
